Madame in the Making

Updated: Dec 22, 2020

The most courageous act is still to think for yourself. Aloud. - Coco Chanel

Madame was inspired by a stained glass portrait ornament, which immediately reminded me of fashion designer and eternal fashion icon Coco Chanel.

Growing up, I was heavily influenced by teachings on how to be a lady. I am by no means a traditionalist. Rather, for me, there is something incredibly powerful and undeniably beautiful about an elegant and refined woman. I read many books about characters with similar qualities and learned by the example of my mother. I admired and wanted to emulate these women for their evident inner and outer beauty, a statement of their character of confidence.

Elegance does not mean you have to be act a certain way, be 'perfect' or adorn oneself with luxurious things. Elegance is a state of mind, a beauty that never dies, reflected in the way that a person carries oneself. It is a power that can allow you to transfix others, allowing you to be a memorable presence and use that strength to create positive influence and impact.

As Coco Chanel aptly put, "elegance is refusal". It is holding your head high, demanding respect, and not conforming to the dictates of others. Elegance is putting fear aside, standing comfortably in your own shoes, choosing your own style, instead of following the latest trend. It is reflective of refusing to bend to the times, but rather remain true to one self, to not sell oneself because it is thought to be 'in'.

An elegant state of mind is the personal cultivation of uplifting and empowering beliefs in oneself to enable achievement and success, placing you in a position of power to accomplish your biggest goals.

Pretty is an accident of nature. Elegant is a self-created work of art. - Being Callabero

Photo by a friend of me trying to have a moment of elegance but getting hair blown into my face by the wind instead, because you know, this is life and you don't have to be perfect. 😊 I felt absolutely bomb in that classic two-piece suit handed down from my mother in any case.
