Waves of Change

Updated: Dec 22, 2020

In the waves of change we find our true direction in life. - Unknown

Painting is how I manage the waves of change we experience in life. This painting is an adaptation of a painting I discovered on Urban Drape, recreated to help me flow through the many changes that I have been experiencing over the past few years. During our twenties, we experience a lot of formulative change. Like the waves of the ocean, this change is natural but can feel intimidating, turbulent, a powerful force of nature that hits you hard. You cannot fight it, but rather have to surrender to and go with the flow in order to keep your head above water.

Sunsets and sunrises are a common theme in my paintings. The interpretation of the sun in this painting for me, is that of light in the midst of the storm. It is the beginning and end to a new day full of surprises, opportunities; change. No matter what you go through in life, the sun will soon set on today, and will rise again to a new dawn. We always have the chance with each day to find a new direction that brings us joy and peace despite the surrounding chaos.

Change happens to us all, arriving in whatever form, whether we want it or not. It is how we process it that makes a fundamental difference. How do you break through the waves to find your way to the safe shores? I believe by staying flexible, curious, authentic, accepting of newness with an open mind and heart, can turn change into opportunity, possibility, our key to resilience. Every living thing on our earth adapts to survive. It is impossible to fight evolution. If we instead allow new information and challenges, assumptions, judgement, narrow ways of thinking to expand us, we can live in flow with the resplendence of life, rather than lose ourselves in the undertow.

Waves of change are constantly breaking

Into the lives of all beings here,

Sometimes these changes are very subtle

But others sometimes are quite dramatic.

How beings respond to waves of change

Determine the feelings growing within,

Accepting changes with joy and hope

Can inspire the spirit to reach new heights.

Feeling overwhelmed and without control

Can send the spirit spiralling down,

Changes do not long remain the same

As new waves are breaking now.

Beings that learn to thrive on change

Create lives with abundant peace,

Peace that soothes their own deep souls

And is a gift for all to share.
